Fayette Hewitt notebook, [18--].

This collection consists of an undated (likely mid to late 1800's) notebook of poetry owned by Fayette Hewitt, probably of Frankfort, Kentucky. The poetry is mostly in English, although a few are in French, and are by famous poets such as Longfellow, Cowpers, and Wilde, but some may have been composed by Hewitt himself.

The First Kentucky Brigade was part of the Confederate Army. it became known as the Orphan Brigade after Union troops captured Fort Donelson (1862), leaving the brigade cut off from it's home state for the duration of the war. Despite this, the Orphan Brigade distinguished itself on and off the battlefield by maintaining high morale, discipline, and effective military tactics.
